RHSC Internal Award Winners

Meet the newest RHSC Internal Award Winners: Thalia Otamendi (Louise McGregor), Holly Reid (Margaret Hood), and Débora Petry Moecke (Jane Hudson).

Each year, the Graduate Programs in Rehabilitation Sciences distribute financial awards to deserving students. This funding includes bursaries, scholarships and prizes and fellowships. In most cases, these awards are judged by faculty members of the Rehabilitation Sciences Graduate Program.

Thalia Otamendi

Thalia is a PhD student co-supervised by Dr. Linda Li (Rehab Sciences) and Dr. Noah Silverberg (Psychology).

Thalia’s research focuses on patient-related barriers to recommended care for persistent symptoms after a concussion. She wants to understand the relationship between patients’ perceptions of their injury and their coping strategies, particularly their treatment-seeking decisions.

In her personal time, Thalia likes to cook, watch/play sports, and spend time with Mother Nature.

Holly Reid

Holly Reid is a returning student to UBC after completing their Masters in Occupational Therapy degree in 2019, and is now a PhD student supervised by Dr. Suzanne Huot.

Holly’s research will center on how the intersection of 2SLGBTQ+ and Indigenous identities influences and is influenced by occupational engagement, referring to activities of daily living, education, employment and other ways people occupy time. They will also explore the relationship between geo-political contexts and experiences of engaging in occupations within broader systems of power (e.g., employment, educational institutions, health care facilities).

Outside of work you can find Holly riding their mountain bike, chasing sunsets, and spending time with their family. Holly values time alone as much as time spent nurturing meaningful connections with others, and often spends time reading, writing and reflecting on life.

Débora Petry Moecke

Débora Petry Moecke is a PhD student, working in the Pulmonary Rehabilitation Research Lab, supervised by Dr Pat Camp.

Her research will use a mix-methods approach to explore the use of telehealth to support the care of Indigenous and non-Indigenous people living with chronic lung diseases, how one’s perception of therapeutic relationship is modified within the context of telehealth and how these perceptions may influence health outcomes.

Outside of academia, Débora enjoys being outdoors, camping, hiking and exploring new places. She is also a big fan of movies and board games.
