Admission Requirements

Applicants must meet the minimum admission requirements established by the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies. As such, applicants are advised to check your eligibility first.

If eligible, applicants must meet the following admission requirements established by Graduate Programs in Rehabilitation Sciences.

Research Requirement

As part of the application process, applicants are required to seek agreement from a Rehabilitation Sciences faculty member who is willing to supervise your research project. Faculty members must be eligible to supervise PhD students, and a member of the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Postdoctoral Studies.

Academic Requirements

  1. Completion of a recognized baccalaureate degree in a health-related discipline such as Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Life Sciences or Social Sciences. Your degree must be academically equivalent to a UBC 4-year Bachelor’s degree, from any accredited post-secondary institution.
  2. Completion of a thesis-based master’s degree in Rehabilitation Sciences, or another related field. Admission may be recommended for students with non-thesis master’s degrees (e.g. Master of Physical Therapy (MPT) or Master of Occupational Therapy (MOT) degrees) when students have participated in research activities or published paper(s).
  3. Academic standing of a minimum A- (80%) average in any master’s degree program approved by Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies for which final grades are reported on your transcript at the time of the application deadline. 
  4. Successful completion of a research methods or statistics course (1 course of 3 credits or equivalent).
  5. Sufficient preparatory academic background to carry out graduate work in the field of rehabilitation.

International Student Requirements

  • Academic Standing

International students may need to meet further academic requirements as outlined by the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies. 

  • Graduate Record Exam

Applicants from non-Canadian or United States universities may be required to provide general GRE (Graduate Record Examination) scores as part of their application at the request of their proposed supervisor. Scores must be valid within the past 2 years.

  • English Language Competency

Applicants who have completed a degree in which English is not the primary language of instruction must provide results of an English language proficiency examination as part of their application. Tests must have been taken within the last 24 months at the time of submission of your application.

Minimum overall score of 88
