Name: Julianne McLeod
Program: MSc
Supervisor: Dr. Naznin Virji-Babul
Tell us a little bit about your lab!
The Perception-Action Lab, led by Dr. Naznin Virji-Babul, focuses on exploring the neural mechanisms underpinning perceptual-motor and social-emotional development from infancy to adulthood. Utilizing brain imaging tools such as DTI, EEG, MEG, and MRI, the lab examines patterns of brain activation associated with these developmental processes and investigates how neurotrauma (i.e. concussion) may disrupt these patterns.
What project are you currently working on?
I am using EEG to examine how concussion impacts brain connectivity in female varsity athletes, with a comparative study on a male-specific cohort. I am also exploring how hormone fluctuations throughout the menstrual cycle might influence brain connectivity in these sex-specific studies.
What do you like to do outside of academia?
As someone who moved here from Ontario, I love to take advantage of everything Vancouver has to offer – beaches, hikes etc.! I like staying active by attending workout classes with friends, which is usually followed up with spending the afternoon in a coffee shop.
Congratulations, Julianne, on being our featured Student of the Month for June!
