April Alumni of the Month – Ethan Simpson

Name: Ethan Simpson

Program: MSc

Graduated: 2019

Thesis: I started my degree in September 2019 with Dr. Ben Mortenson as my supervisor. I completed it in October 2021, and I was fortunate to have an in-person graduation ceremony. My dissertation was titled: “Exploring the COVID-19 pandemic related experiences of individuals with a spinal cord injury.” Dr. Mortenson was an excellent supervisor and endless source of knowledge.

How would you describe your research in the UBC Rehabilitation Sciences program?

The program really laid the foundation for how to instigate and conduct a research study, whether it be qualitative, quantitative, or mixed methods. I came in having already written a dissertation as part of my BSc in Exercise and Sports Science, but the UBC Rehabilitation Sciences program elevated my skillset to the next level. The courses provided the tools, framework, and deeper understanding to be able to make well informed decisions during each stage of a study. The lecturers and faculty members were always helpful and highly insightful, and I augmented my learning by completing electives that helped me dive even further into the areas of research that facilitated my particular focus.

Where and what is your current position?

I did not stray too far from the program after graduation, continuing as a full-time Research Assistant with Dr. Mortenson’s lab. I then moved into my current position as the Research Coordinator for Dr. Bill Miller’s lab in the Department of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy at UBC. We focus on optimising mobility and wellbeing through the use of assistive technology so that adults can fully participate in daily life. As the Research Coordinator, I get to experience and facilitate all studies that the lab is involved in, and I continuously use, hone, and build upon the skills I learned during the Rehabilitation Sciences program.

How do you like to spend your free time?

Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my family, friends, and pets. When possible, I like to ski, play football, and explore new places. As a British person in Canada, there are always new things to experience.

Congratulations Ethan on being our featured Alumni of the Month for April!
