January Alumni of the Month – Sara Izadi

Name: Sara Izadi

Program: PhD

Graduated: 2021

Thesis: “Cognitive Orientation to Daily Occupational Performance: Effects on Brain Structure/Function and Motor Outcomes in Children with Developmental Coordination Disorder”

How would you describe your research in the UBC Rehabilitation Sciences program?

At UBC, I was responsible for collecting and analyzing diverse datasets, including MRI data, motor assessment results, and qualitative interview data, for multiple research projects. Additionally, I played a significant role in two systematic reviews, handling tasks such as literature searches, study identification, data extraction, and evidence synthesis. Overseeing the research endeavors of ten graduate students, I provided co-supervision on their projects and imparted training to undergraduates for the proper execution of MRI analysis. Beyond my primary thesis project, I took the initiative to design a randomized controlled trial, focusing on investigating the impact of brain stimulation on the motor performance of children diagnosed with Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD).

Where and what is your current position?

Currently, I am a postdoctoral researcher at BC Cancer. I lead diverse qualitative and quantitative research projects in the field of cancer care. This includes collaboration with industry partners and government agencies to launch pan-Canadian studies. Some notable projects include exploring cancer patients’ experiences with telehealth, determining optimal strategies for human papillomavirus (HPV) based screening for cervical cancer, monitoring and evaluating cervical cancer screening cascades, and conducting a discrete choice experiment on using cannabis to alleviate cancer symptoms.

How do you like to spend your free time?

During my free time, I cherish moments with my one-year-old daughter, engage in regular workouts, and enjoy socializing with friends. I also channel my passion for user experience (UX) design by freelancing, working on website and mobile application projects that allow me to explore creative and innovative solutions aiming to increase digital accessibility.

Congratulations Sara on being our featured Alumni of the Month for January!
