RHSC Student in CMS Fellows Program – Astou Thiam

Join us in congratulating RHSC PhD Student Astou Thiam on being selected to participate in the current cohort of the Centre for Migration Studies Grad Fellows Program! The CMS Grad Fellows Program supports outstanding UBC graduate students who are engaged in research related to human migration and mobilities.

Tell us a little bit about your lab! What type of research are you conducting?

I am grateful to have the best supervision, Dr. Suzanne Huot, she is culturally sensitive, transparent, supportive, knowledgeable, and approachable. My doctoral research will examine the complex flows and multiple drivers of global migration from West Africa to Canada.

What award did you win, and how will this help your research?

I am confident that with its unique mentorship opportunity and events, the CMS Grad Fellows Program will serve my professional development, will deepen my knowledge on human mobilities and provide me the means to successfully complete my PhD program.

What do you like to do outside of academia?

Physical activity is my go-to, from kickboxing, spinning, dancing to hiking. It’s a must for my physical, mental, and “immigrant” health. Also, I like to watch comedy-drama telenovelas.
