The Master of Science in Rehabilitation Sciences (MSc) is designed to prepare individuals to conduct advanced research, both independently and in collaboration with others, in the field of Rehabilitation Sciences. Through the program, students are supported to investigate an area of research relevant to rehabilitation through critical analysis of problems related to basic sciences, clinical practice, or to development of theory. In combination with a MSc thesis, graduates are enabled to advance the science of rehabilitation to promote physical, mental, and social well-being for people of all levels of abilities.
The Doctor of Philosophy in Rehabilitation Sciences (PhD) research program is designed to:
- Prepare students to conduct independent and collaborative research in the discipline of rehabilitation sciences.
- Facilitate students to conduct significant and original research which will contribute to the body of evidence-based rehabilitation practice.
- Prepare rehabilitation scholars and scientists for leadership roles in academia, public health, education and industry.
- Fill a societal demand for the need of doctoral trained individuals in the discipline of rehabilitation to fill current and expected faculty vacancies in Canada.
- Enhance the links between theoretical advances and practice through the development of the conceptual knowledge base of rehabilitation.
- Develop leaders in rehabilitation research who can initiate and complete novel, innovative and effective rehabilitation treatments.
The MPT/PhD program provides a new option for outstanding students with an interest in both clinical and research training relevant to physical therapy. The MPT/PhD program is designed to provide students flexibility in the completion of their concurrent clinical and research training, and to integrate their clinical and research learning, resulting in an accelerated completion time (approximately 5 years). A research-based Master’s or formal experience in a research setting that has produced a co-authored paper in a peer-reviewed journal relevant to physical therapy research is required for admission.
