June Student of the Month: Atieh Yekta

Name: Atieh Yekta

Program: PhD

Supervisor: Dr. Suzanne Huot

Tell us a little bit about your lab!

As a researcher and PhD student at Dr. Suzanne Huot’s Lab, I have the privilege of collaborating with a diverse group of graduate students, all of whom bring unique academic and professional backgrounds to our research. This diversity not only fosters a sense of appreciation but also fuels creativity and innovation across all levels of our individual and collaborative projects. Our research is founded upon the principles of occupational science, which we apply to investigate the complexities of human occupations in emerging contexts and diverse populations.

What project are you currently working on?

Currently, my primary focus is on my doctoral dissertation, which examines how algorithmic management systems influence the occupational experiences of immigrant platform workers in Metro Vancouver.

Besides my doctoral project, I am also co-supervising two groups of talented MOT graduate students who are conducting secondary research on platform-based gig work. One group is examining the dynamics of occupational identity and balance among platform workers after immigrating to Canada, while the other is exploring ways that the employment and immigrant settlement sectors can provide better support for this population in Metro Vancouver.

These research projects are of significant importance, as they shed light on the challenges and opportunities faced by immigrants in the ever-changing platform economy. The insights gained from these studies will inform policymakers and service providers on how to best support this group in adapting to the new world of work.

What do you like to do outside of academia?

Outside of academia, I am passionate about exploring new local and international destinations and immersing myself in diverse cultures through sampling local cuisines and engaging with the community. Besides, fostering relationships with my loved ones is an essential aspect of my life beyond academia. Whether it’s taking scenic road trips to Whistler or unwinding amidst nature’s beauty, I enjoy spending quality time with my family and friends. I also find enjoyment in engaging in thrilling outdoor activities such as parasailing, skydiving, and cycling to Cypress Mountain to stay active and get my adrenaline pumping.

Congratulations Atieh on being our featured Student of the Month for June!
