MSc Student Avneet Dhillon Receives HRL Foundation & Chapman Grants

Congratulations to Avneet Dhillon for being awarded the HRL Foundation and Chapman grants! Find out more about Avneet’s award-winning research below and join us in congratulating Avneet on her stellar achievement.

What award did you win, and how will this help your research?

The HRL Foundation annually awards a grant to a graduate student studying accessible Mental Health and/or Addiction support services. This grant will support my expenses and allow me to focus on my research. I also received the Chapman Grant for a community outreach project focused on educating the South Asian Community in BC high schools about substance use and overdose, addressing stigma, and providing leadership and prevention training. This grant will provide community experience and enhance my knowledge translation skills.

Tell us a little bit about your lab! What type of research are you conducting?

My lab Barbic Laboratories focuses on mental health and substance use research. We specialize in both quantitative and qualitative research, with a strong focus on Youth. My research is centered around South Asian Youth Mental Health and Substance Use, primarily in the lens of integrated youth services. I am under the supervision of Dr. Skye Barbic.

What do you like to do outside of academia?

Outside of research, you can find me working on artistic projects with friends, going to concerts, art galleries, and thrifting. I also am a huge foodie and love trying out new food spots in Vancouver!
