Name: Jeff Boniface
Program: Master of Science in Rehabilitation Sciences (MSc)
Graduated: 2019
Dissertation: Understanding the perceptions of people with physical disability before and after an employment mentorship program
How would you describe your research in the UBC Rehabilitation Sciences program?
This study investigated the perspective on employment people receiving disability benefits had before and after participation in a mentorship program. Unfortunately, people with disabilities face numerous employment barriers related to accessibility, social justice, need for mentorship, and generally fulfilling their desire to contribute and belong in society. This study resonated with me in the work I do as an occupational therapist using a relationship-focused approach with people so they can reach valued occupational participation. It was a privilege to be part of the team within the UBC Rehabilitation Sciences program and the participants in the Vancouver ConnecTra Society as part of this study.
Where and what is your current position?
I have over 28 years’ experience as the owner and front-line clinician of a community-based private occupational therapy practice in Greater Vancouver. I also work as a Clinical Associate Professor and Associate Academic Fieldwork Coordinator at the UBC Department of Occupational Science & Occupational Therapy.
How do you like to spend your free time?
I spend my down-time with my spouse and two children in the great outdoors, and exploring the world. I also volunteer for an international organization providing in-person and remote rehabilitation support to children and adults with disabilities in a rural community in India.
Congratulations Jeff on being our featured Alumni of the Month for April!
