Congratulations to Drs Clare Ardern, Kristin Campbell and Naznin Virji-Babul!
It was announced in November 2025 that each received a fellowship under the UBC AI & Health Network Fellows Program. This Program aims to enhance the delivery of advanced training and mentorship to cultivate future leaders who will drive innovation and transformation in healthcare through artificial intelligence. The Program supports principal investigators to recruit, mentor and support postdoctoral/clinical fellows conducting interdisciplinary research in artificial intelligence and health.
- Dr Clare Ardern’s project “Co-creating an AI-based decision-support tool for triaging and diagnosing musculoskeletal conditions” will work on developing DigiMSK, an AI-powered chatbot co-designed with patients and clinicians to help people describe symptoms and connect to appropriate care.
- Dr Kristin Campbell is a co-PI along with Dr Lauren Capozzi, a physiatrist at BC Cancer, and Dr JJ Nunez, a physician and AI researcher at BC Cancer. Their project “Adapting and Evaluating a Human-in-the-loop Artificial Intelligence System to Enhance Exercise Support for People with Colon Cancer” involves formative research to adapt an existing Human-in-the-loop AI-supported system to mimic delivery of the CO.21 program.
- Dr Naznin Virji-Babul’s project “AI Integrated Diagnostic Platform for Mild Traumatic Brain Injury” will develop an AI-powered diagnostic tool that integrates electroencephalography (EEG), a non-invasive measure of brain activity, with clinical data such as symptoms, injury details, and medical history.
