February Alumni of the Month: Riley Louie

Name: Riley Louie

Program: Doctor of Philosophy in Rehabilitation Sciences (PhD)

Graduated: 2021

Dissertation: Walking once again: use of a robotic exoskeleton during subacute stroke rehabilitation to promote functional recovery

How would you describe your research project in the UBC Rehabilitation Sciences program?

I very much value the time I had in the UBC Rehabilitation Sciences program to conduct research. While my research focus for my dissertation was focused on walking recovery after stroke, I had numerous opportunities to conduct and collaborate on other research topics, including brain imaging and post-concussion syndrome. I am very grateful to have had a superb supervisor, Dr. Janice Eng, who encouraged whatever endeavours I pursued.

Where and what is your current position?

I will be starting a new position in January 2023 with Providence Health Care as a Practice Consultant – Strategic Education (Allied). I have been working with Providence as a physiotherapist since graduating from the Rehabilitation Sciences Program, and this new role will help to develop health authority’s education programs for new graduates in the allied health disciplines (physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech language pathology, social work, and clinical nutrition).

How do you like to spend your free time?

I spend a lot of time spoiling my dog with long walks at the beach or on the trails at UBC, and sneaking in some volleyball for myself here and there. When I’m feeling very relaxed, I like to pick up a good book!

Congratulations Riley on being our featured Alumni of the Month for February!
