RHSC Internal Award Winners

Meet the newest RHSC Internal Award Winners: Cristina Rubino (Lou McGregor), Justin Turner (Margaret Hood), and Justin Losciale (Jane Hudson).

Each year, the Graduate Programs in Rehabilitation Sciences distribute financial awards to deserving students. This funding includes bursaries, scholarships and prizes and fellowships. In most cases, these awards are judged by faculty members of the Rehabilitation Sciences Graduate Program.

Cristina Rubino

Cristina Rubino is a PhD student in the Brain Behaviour Lab, supervised by Dr. Lara Boyd.

Her thesis will advance understanding of how the visual and motor systems change to support the learning of eye-hand coordination; using robot-assisted technology with integrated eye-tracking along with neuroimaging. By incorporating community engagement, Cristina’s research will also advance understanding of the impact that brain damage from stroke has on re-learning eye-hand coordination.

Outside of the lab, Cristina enjoys playing and coaching Ultimate Frisbee and exploring new heights by hiking and cycling.

Justin Turner

Justin Turner is an OT and PhD student working in Dr. Pat Camp’s Pulmonary Rehabilitation Research Laboratory at the UBC Centre for Heart Lung Innovation.

In his mixed methods and policy-oriented doctoral work, Justin is collaborating with the Indigenous health and research organization Carrier Sekani Family Services to investigate how recent severe wildfires in BC’s northern interior region have affected local First Nations people.

Outside school, Justin enjoys activities that involve connecting with nature including camping, snowshoeing, hiking, and hanging out at the beach.

Justin Losciale

Justin is supervised by Dr. Jackie Whittaker, and he is studying the role of impaired lower leg muscle function on the development of knee symptoms and knee osteoarthritis in young individuals who experienced a knee joint injury during sport and recreational activities.

During the COVID times, I have been sharpening my cooking skills and have found that I truly love to cook, particularly seasonal vegetables.
